The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
