WHO Issues Alert Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than one in 10 people eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, warns the global health agency as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong care," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to universal availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, explains the agency.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Even in the current most favorable scenario, the supply of GLP-1 therapies might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The guideline calls on countries and companies to widen access, by approaches including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

The injections imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

People typically begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research indicates patients may regain a significant portion after a year of stopping the drug, when their usual food cravings return.

To be carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for experiencing health problems, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and specific cancers.

Excess weight concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was associated with over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
